These alumni mentors–representing various fields–have agreed to share details about how they started out in their career, offer tips for students about how to do the same, and explain what they like and find challenging about their jobs. Each student will be paired with mentors for small group discussions (4-6 students) lasting 20-25 minutes each. After about 20-25 minutes, we’ll rotate, giving students the chance to chat with alumni from 3 different fields. The last 30 minutes will be an open networking session. We expect the group discussions to be informal and very interactive, giving students a chance to ask lots of questions.

If you are looking for ways to build your networking and informational interviewing skills, attending an event like this is a great start. It will give you a chance to practice these things in an open, welcoming environment.

One last note–at the Graduate Center, we have students from many disciplines, as you all well know. You may look at the list of mentors and feel that they don’t quite match your background or your career goals. If this is the case, you might approach the event as an opportunity to practice the above mentioned skills. You should also know that we plan to do more events like this in the future; please feel free to send me your suggestions of the types of alumni you’d like us to include in future events and we will do our very best to include them.
