CUNY Graduate Center

New-York Historical Society

Graduate Archival Fellowship

Application Deadline: April 24th by 11:00 AM

The Provost’s Office invites applications for up to four New-York Historical Society Graduate Archival Fellowships.  These $6,000 fellowships will be offered to level II or III Graduate Center Ph.D. students from any program with primary research interests related to the collections at the N-YHS. The New-York Historical Society and the Graduate Center are jointly co-sponsoring these fellowships in order to provide qualified graduate students an opportunity to work on projects (related to the student’s own research agenda) that process, describe, and help create the historical record based on primary source materials.  The primary responsibilities of the award winners will be to collaborate with curators and archivists from N-YHS in order to process uncatalogued collections, improve public access to documents and related materials, and to gain experience in creating and organizing collections.

While the rich and diverse collections of the N-YHS span the 17th through the 20th centuries and embrace the national as well as the local, it is offering CUNY Fellows projects in the following areas: 18th-19th century family libraries; the fine and decorative arts; travel literature; business and advertising ephemera; family papers and records; business organizations; and historic photographs from the mid-19th century up to the present.  Media include rare books, printed ephemera, digital collections, manuscripts and archives, and original iconographic materials. Fellowship recipients will be required to be in residence at least 7 hours a week at the N-YHS across the fall and spring semesters (15 weeks in each semester); in addition, recipients will be required to do a brief public presentation on their work and write a blog post about their experiences before the end of the Spring 2016 semester.

To apply please send a letter of interest describing your research interests and related experience with specific reference to the collections housed at the N-YHS, a c.v., and a letter of support from your primary advisor to:
