GC Petition: The Graduate Center, CUNY as a Sanctuary Campus

In the aftermath of the 2016 presidential election, the DSC (Doctoral Students’ Council) asks Graduate Center students, faculty, alumni, and members of the CUNY community to sign the following petition for the development of a protocol to make The Graduate Center a sanctuary for undocumented students, staff, and family members.

This petition implores the Graduate Center administration to do what is within their power to:

1) Prevent Campus Security and public safety officers from collaborating with ICE, who may inquire with the assistance of Campus Security and public safety officers into the immigration status of Graduate Center students;
2) Continue to safeguard student privacy;
3) Maintain in-state tuition for students who have qualified under DACA;
4) Create opportunities for the continuation of degree programs via online programs for students in the event that they are deported, imprisoned, or intimidated by federal immigration forces;
5) Offer financial assistance to undocumented students to apply for various forms of relief or for immigration application fees, if the need arises;
6) Provide on The Graduate Center website a dedicated resources page for undocumented students;
7) Address these concerns immediately in a public statement, as well as insure that all immigrant students are provided with institutional support towards continuing school in 2017 and in the future.
