We would like to invite graduate students in your department to join their counterparts at Columbia University for a networking/informational interview event on the morning of Thursday, January 21st. The event will take place the first morning of the History in Action conference (full schedule here), part of the Columbia University History in Action Program of the Mellon-AHA Career Diversity Initiative.

To kick off the conference, we have invited local professionals who hold PhDs in history and other humanities disciplines to gather at Columbia’s Maison Française from 9:30-11:30am to hold informational interviews with current PhD and MA students about the historical work they do outside of the professoriate. The first session, from 9:30-10:30, will focus on publishing, museum and archive work, and journalism; the second, from 10:30-11:30, will turn to work in non-profit organizations, business, administration, and education. Faculty and students in your department are, of course, also invited to attend the rest of the conference.

Confirmed participants for the networking event include staff from Rutgers University Press, Columbia University Press, the Museum of the City of New York, the Rare Books and Manuscripts Library at Columbia University, the Rockefeller Archives, the American Council of Learned Societies, the Kupferberg Center for the Arts, and Educational Testing Services. Additional participants have also been invited.

Although this event will be largely informal, interested students are encouraged to dress somewhere in the neighborhood of “business casual” and to bring copies of their resumes.
