Sara Reguer traces the story of the Sephardic De Riu family. Arriving in Bosa, Sardinia in the thirteenth century, the family underwent a forced conversion in 1492 and subsequently fled into the interior mountains. There they survived as Conversos until the middle of the twentieth century.
Sara Reguer is professor of Judaic studies. She has been chair of the department since 1985. In addition to teaching at Brooklyn College, she taught at Yeshiva University, Hofstra University and the University of Naples, Italy.
She has recently published The Most Tenacious of Minorities: The Jews of Italy, following the 2,000 year struggle of the Jews of Italy as they tried to maintain their Jewish identity while at the same time participating in Italian culture despite religious persecution, ghetto-ization, and the Holocaust.
