Thursday, October 18: Discussion with Professor François Furstenberg

CUNY EARS (Early American Republic Seminar) cordially invites our colleagues to a discussion on Thursday, October 18th, with Dr. François Furstenberg of the Université de Montréal. We will be discussing excerpts from Professor Furstenberg’s latest project entitled “When the United States Spoke French: French Émigrés, Land, and Empire in the Age of Revolutions.” Dr. Furstenberg’s visit to the CUNY Graduate Center is part of EARS’ monthly discussion of written works with established scholars in the field of the early American republic. Our conversations are lively and instructive, so we hope you’ll join!

This event is free and open to all, and will be held in the History Department of the CUNY Graduate Center (Room 5111) on Thursday, October 18, at 3 pm. A small reception for Professor Furstenberg will precede our discussion. The reception begins at 2pm. Advance reading of the paper is required; please contact Alisa Harrison (aharrison@gc.cuny.edu) or Roy Rogers (royrichardrogers@gmail.com) to RSVP and to receive a copy of the paper.

François Furstenberg is an Associate Professor of History at the Université de Montréal, where he teaches and researches the political culture and intellectual history of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. He is the author In the Name of the Father: Washington’s Legacy, Slavery, and the Making of a Nation (2006), which was a finalist for the Washington Book Prize. Additionally, Dr. Furstenberg has authored award winning articles in both the William & Mary Quarterly and the Journal of American History; including “Beyond Slavery and Freedom: Autonomy, Agency, and Resistance in Early American Political Discourse.” The Journal of American History 89:4 (March, 2003). Professor Furstenberg received his BA from Columbia University, in 1994, and his Ph.D. in history from Johns Hopkins University in 2003.
