The American Studies Department at Wesleyan seeks a scholar-teacher in nineteenth-century U.S. cultural studies/history for a tenure-track appointment at the Assistant Professor level, beginning July 1, 2020. Gender, social reform, and empire are the areas within the field that are the Department’s highest preferences; additional areas of focus may include religion, immigration, and urbanism. We seek an interdisciplinary historian with a Ph.D. in American studies, history, or a related field entailing an immersion in historical research and analysis.  Due to the current composition of the Department, candidates with Ph.D.s in literary studies will not be considered. Candidates should be actively engaged in scholarly research and writing and prepared to teach four courses per year (two per semester) to undergraduates. Additional duties include advising and mentoring students and participating in faculty governance at the departmental and university level. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in hand (within the field specifications stated above) by the time of appointment to be hired as an Assistant Professor; a successful candidate may be hired as an Instructor if the candidate does not have a Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment, but must complete the Ph.D. (within the field specifications stated above) within one year of hire. Applications from candidates who have held a tenure-track job for more than two years will not be considered.
