Amy Dru Stanley on “Revolution at Sea: Antislavery and Human Rights”

Wednesday, December 4th, 2024, 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Abstract:  A revolution of slaves at sea claimed the ocean as a space of human rights aspiration. In liberal political economy, the high seas were trade routes connecting markets, where nations engaged in commerce, pursuing wealth creation while defending empire. But a slave rebellion aboard the Creole, an American ship sailing on the Atlantic Ocean in 1841, inspired an antislavery idea of the ocean as a realm of natural human liberty.  The rebellion caused conflict over property rights, international law, and sovereignty on the seas.  Out of this conflict emerged an oceanic idea of human rights that spurred antislavery legislation during the Civil War while transforming a theory of the free sea that was centuries old.

This event will take place in the Segal Theatre and will be livestreamed via Zoom. For In-Person RSVPs, please email history@gc.cuny.edu. For online attendance, please register here
