During his long and distinguished career, Professor Bowersock taught ancient history at Oxford and Harvard before joining the Institute for Advanced Study in 1980.  He is the author of more than 300 articles and books on Greek, Roman, and Near Eastern history, including recently Empires in Collision in Late Antiquity: The Menahem Stern Jerusalem Lectures (Hanover, NH, 2012) and The Throne of Adulis: Red Sea Wars on the Eve of Islam (Oxford, 2013).
