Adults Needed for a paid GC Research Study

We are looking for participants for a one- or two-day study on learning to produce foreign language sounds that are absent in English. You will listen to recordings of the foreign language sounds to see if you can tell them apart from each other. We will also record your voice while trying to produce syllables containing these sounds.

To participate in this study, you must:
✓ Be at least between 18 and 55 years old.
✓ Have English as your primary language.
✓ Not speak, have studied, or have grown up hearing Arabic or Hebrew.
✓ Have normal (or corrected to normal) hearing and vision.
✓ Have no history of speech or language impairments.

There are three groups we are filling (participants will be randomly assigned to one of these groups):
• Group 1 does a short one-day session (20 minutes) and get paid $15 for that short session.
• Group 2 does two short sessions on consecutive days (each session is 20 minutes) and get paid $30 for both sessions.
• Group 3 does two longer sessions on consecutive days (each session is one hour) and get paid $60 for both sessions.
Ultrasound tongue imaging may be used for Group 3 participants to visualize tongue movement in real-time during speech. The procedures are safe and straightforward to perform.

The experiment will take place in the Speech Production, Acoustics and Perception Laboratory at the Graduate Center (365 Fifth Avenue, New York). If you are interested in participating in this study, please contact Ghada Shejaeya at gshejaeya@gradcenter.cuny.edu
