Modern African American History Description

African American History II begins with the presupposition that Africans have always been and continue to be agents at the center of their own historical and cultural experiences. This position stands in opposition to the Eurocentric historical position that African history exists only in the shadow of the European experience. Students in this course will be introduced to and reflect upon materials which document the history of African peoples in the post-civil war period and their protracted struggle to regain their freedom in the United States of America.
