Call for Applications: 3 GC Digital Initiatives Fellowships

 

 

GC Digital Initiatives is currently searching for three fellowship positions:

  1. Program Social Media Fellow;
  2. Petrie Digital Scholarship Fellow
  3. Manifold Fellow

Review of applications will begin on Wednesday, August 21 and will continue on a rolling basis until the positions are filled.

  1. Program Social Media Fellow

They are currently seeking a Program Social Media Fellow (PSMF) to work with the MA Program in Digital Humanities and MS Program in Data Analysis and Visualization. In this position, the PSMF will work with the program to share faculty, and student news through social media services such as LinkedIn and Instagram. The PSMF will help the program connect with alumni and foster community engagement for both current students and alumni. The fellow will also work with other PSMFs to share ideas, explore new digital tools and strategies for engagement, develop methods of assessment, and offer training to the Graduate Center community. Compensation and Benefits

  • This fellowship requires fellows to work a total of 450 non-teaching hours during the academic year, approximately 15 hours per week.
  • Compensation for the fellowship will be a minimum of $29,374 for the academic year.
  • The Fellowship is paid in two parts: Fellows will be appointed to the Graduate Center payroll as Graduate Assistant Bs (GAB) at their own current rate (the minimum GAB salary is currently $13,215) and also receive a Provost’s Award in the amount of $16,159 that will be paid through the Office of Financial Aid.
    • The GAB title provides eligibility to purchase the low-cost NYSHIP health insuranceas well as in-state tuition remission for fellows who are within their first ten (10) registered semesters of doctoral study.
    • Fellows who are past their ten registered semesters of doctoral study will be eligible to receive in-state tuition remission at the Level III rate as per the 2017-2023 PSC- CUNY contract (this benefit provides for this tuition remission for a maximum of four semesters past the student’s 10th registered semester).

 

 

  1. Petrie Digital Scholarship Fellow

This fellowship builds upon the CUNY Digital Project Institute, a recent program aimed at helping CUNY undergraduates gain technical skills, which was generously funded by the Carol and Milton Petrie Foundation. They seek a digital fellow who will work to expand their team’s ability to connect CUNY students with technology companies and cultural institutions in the New York City area as they prepare for the opening of the Center for Digital Scholarship and Data Visualization.

 

Work for this fellowship will include:

 

  • Helping to explore and plan future digital skills training opportunities;
  • Strengthening connections with NYC cultural institutions, museums, and archives as their work connects with the activities of the Center;
  • Building connections between the GC and technology firms, as well as liaising with CUNY offices such as the GC Office of Career Planning and Professional Development and CUNY Central career-focused initiatives;
  • Writing grant-related reports;
  • Helping to publicize GCDI and the work that it does through reports and publications;
  • Contributing to grant applications.

  1. Manifold Fellow

GC Digital Initiatives welcomes applications from GC doctoral students to join the Manifold Team as a Manifold Graduate Fellow. This position offers graduate students the opportunity to gain experience with digital publishing on the Manifold platform, to design and lead workshops, to work one-on-one with CUNY Manifold users, to foster the creation of Open Educational Resources (OER) at CUNY, and to work with the larger Manifold Team to help think through the future of digital publishing.

In this position, the Manifold Graduate Fellow will work with Open Educational Technologist and OER Specialist Robin Miller and Matthew K. Gold, Director, M.A. in Digital Humanities and M.S. in Data Analysis and Visualization and Associate Professor of English & Digital Humanities, to support the CUNY instance of Manifold, helping faculty, graduate students, librarians, and staff create vibrant digital publications.

Project examples on CUNY’s Manifold instance include: Great Books for Composition Courses, Modern Humanities, The CUNY Student Editions, Black Diasporic Visions, Journal of Interactive Technology and Pedagogy (JITP), and Benito Cereno. Further examples may be found on the Manifold instances run by The University of Minnesota Press, The University of Washington Libraries and Press, and Brown University, among others.

They encourage applications from women, Black and Indigenous people of color, and underrepresented groups in higher education and technology. They are especially interested in students who would bring a focus on open pedagogy, anti-racism, and social justice publishing to the Manifold project.

Sample tasks include:

  • Onboarding new Manifold users (faculty, staff, students)
  • Answering Manifold user questions by email
  • Running Manifold workshops (on-site and online)
  • Providing weekly drop-in office hours
  • Writing “how-to’s” for specific tasks on Manifold
  • Participating in weekly and bi-weekly Manifold Team meetings
  • Managing the CUNY Manifold Users groupon the CUNY Academic Commons
  • Attending events and promoting Manifold within the larger CUNY community
  • Presenting on Manifold at academic conferences
  • Testing new Manifold features and providing thoughtful feedback

Minimum qualifications and experience:

  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Able to complete tasks in a timely manner, under minimal supervision
  • Willingness to learn new technological tools
  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of OER
  • Familiar with Copyright and Public Domainand Creative Commons licenses
  • Knowledge of digital publishing and/or the digital humanities
  • Comfortable teaching people at different technical skill levels simultaneously

  • Compensation for this position is $30,000. It is funded through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and will be paid through the CUNY Research Foundation.
