Doctoral Student Research Grants
If you are a GC doctoral student in your second through sixth year, you are likely eligible to apply for the Doctoral Student Research Grant, which can get you up to $1,500 for research, travel expenses, accommodations, conference fees, a research assistant, supplies not covered by your program, as well as other expenses not covered by your program — for libraries, databases, publication fees, and the like.
For more information about the grant, carefully read the DSRG guidelines, where you’ll find details about eligible expenses (page 2), online application instructions (page 5), and much more.
Please note: these guidelines are for the current round (Round 18), not the next round (Round 19), the one we’re encouraging you to apply to. These guidelines, however, are still a good reference, because the guidelines will basically be 99% the same as before.
NOTE: One major difference from previous rounds: if you’re eligible to apply — i.e. if you’re a second through sixth year doctoral student and you haven’t been awarded during Round 18 — you will need to be registered for the Spring 2024 semester when you apply. This registration for the upcoming Spring semester is a requirement from the folks in Financial Aid.

The deadline to apply for the grant is January 31, 2024.
The DSRG application will be available to eligible students on CUNYfirst starting sometime during the first week of December. In previous rounds the CUNYfirst application would already be open at this time in November, but because the CUNYfirst IT folks have some major changes to make, the application for the upcoming round (Round 19) won’t be open for at least a few more weeks. Again, it looks like it’ll be during the first week of December.
Also, please note: if you apply and are awarded (sometime in April or May of 2024) and for some reason you cannot go through with your original plan (e.g. if the conference you planned to attend is cancelled or you’ve discovered a better conference), you will have the option of changing your original plan — with approval from your mentor. It’s a simple process.
Feel free to reach out to us with any questions at this email address. But first, please read the guidelines.
