Fall Adjunct Opportunity, CCNY’s Colin Powell School

 

The Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership, the home of the social sciences at The City College of New York, is hiring Adjunct Lecturers to serve as discussion section leaders for the Fall 2024 semester to teach an onboarding course for freshmen students, Bridges to Success: Leadership and the Social Sciences/US Experience. The course is designed to ease the transition to college and to position new students for academic, personal, and professional success. It is organized around three topics: an introduction to the social sciences, the skills, and tools for successfully navigating college and career, including the development of student personal wellness plans, and the exploration of student power and the history of student activism at CCNY.

 

In Fall 2024, the course will be scaled and enhanced with support from a four (4) year grant initiative—Welcoming Experiences and Learning Communities to Maximize Early Success (WELCOME)—funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The WELCOME initiative will expand existing programs for first-year students at the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership by creating opportunities for new students to take three courses together as a cohort (25 students each) in their first semester and receive intensive advising and mentorship. The Adjunct Lecturers for Bridges to the Success who are teaching discussions that are part of the WELCOME grant program will be paid for 15 extra non-teaching adjunct hours in return for participating in special meetings about the initiative in advance of and during the semester. 

 

The class schedule is as follows: the plenary/lecture portion runs on Mondays from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. Discussion sections meet either immediately after plenaries on Mondays from 5:00 to 6:15 p.m. or on Wednesdays from 2:00 to 3:15 p.m. As part of the treatment cohorts, adjunct lecturers will be responsible for meeting with the advising team and the program manager/director of the course to ensure a comprehensive support system for students.

        

Core responsibilities of the position will include:

 

·   Performs teaching and related faculty functions, including grading, regular communications with students, and teaching discussion sections

 

·   Provide detailed and timely feedback to students on written assignments

 

·   Adhere to a shared set of assignments, rubrics, and curricula across all sections of the course

 

·   Hold office hours weekly, at the contractual rate of 1 office hour weekly/3-section course

 

·   Attend weekly faculty/student support meetings and provide a report(s) of student progress and concerns

 

·   Complete required administrative tasks, including verifying enrollment rosters, entering final grades, and completing any necessary paperwork in a timely manner

 

·   Comply with all relevant department, college, and CUNY policies

 

·   Completing required Employee Sexual and Interpersonal Violence Prevention

 (ESPARC) and Workplace Violence Prevention (WVP) training each academic year

 

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

 

·   Bachelor’s degree with at least one year of post-college experience, ideally in an educational setting.

 

·   Demonstrated commitment to working with college students.

 

·   Demonstrated commitment to equity based on race, gender, and class; ability to connect with people from historically marginalized identities.

 

·   Ability to communicate effectively, including in person and through emails, virtual/phone calls, and other means, with students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

COMPENSATION AND HOW TO APPLY

 

The Adjunct Lecturer’s compensation range is $91.67 – $98.40 per hour (as a teaching adjunct lecturer, 32 credit hours/semester). Additional compensation for 15 hours will be provided for the faculty and advisor meetings required in the role, which will be provided as Non-Teaching hours that begin in the summer of 2024. The Adjunct Lecturer will be expected to work in person in New York City.
