Four Freedoms Park Conservancy, which operates, maintains, and programs Franklin D.
Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park, seeks aspiring academics to develop and conduct tours. Franklin
D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park is the first memorial dedicated to the former President in his
home state of New York. Located on the southern tip of Roosevelt Island in New York City, it is
the last work of the late Louis I. Kahn, an iconic architect of the 20th century. The Park
celebrates the Four Freedoms, as pronounced in President Roosevelt’s famous January 6, 1941
State of the Union speech.

Tours should focus on topics to related to the park’s mission to advance President
Roosevelt’s legacy and inspire, educate, and engage the public in the ideals of the Four
Freedoms: freedom of speech and expression, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and
freedom from fear. Topics may include, but are not limited to, President Roosevelt, the Four
Freedoms, architectural history, political history, and New York City history. Tour options are
purposefully open-ended so that candidates can customize their topics according to their research
interests. Students will receive a stipend of $500, the ability to gain professional experience in
public history, and an opportunity to network with notable people involved with FDR Four
Freedoms Park, including the park’s founder, Ambassador William vanden Heuvel.
To apply, please submit a 1-2 page proposal and brief outline of your tour. Tours should
run approximately thirty minutes to an hour. Four Freedoms Park looks to implement 2-3 tours
within the coming months. Those selected would be expected to commit to giving a minimum of
two tours throughout the fall and spring seasons. For more information on the park, please visit
