Full-time Graduate Dissertation Research Scholarship

The Graduate School Language & Literature at Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich (Germany) offers a full-time dissertation fellowship (up to 3 years) for excellent international students wishing to pursue a doctoral degree in North American History, History of the Americas, or Transatlantic History. The fellowship is sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Service.

The scholarship offers graduate students an ideal environment for writing a doctoral thesis since it provides access to a network of internationally renowned scholars and is embedded in LMU’s outstanding research-driven infrastructure.

Application Requirements:

  • Academic excellence
  • Master’s degree in a related field (thesis grade with at least ‘good’; accomplished within the last six years)
  • Non-German nationality
  • Residence in Germany not longer than 15 months prior to May 1, 2025
  • English language skills (C1)
  • Candidates without any German language skills are eligible for a German language class in Germany through the DAAD, prior to the fellowship
  • Candidates must not have completed a PhD previously

  • Short abstract and research proposal (max. 5 pages, excluding bibliography), fields of North American History, History of the Americas, or Transatlantic History
  • Schedule for doctoral dissertation research (including information about research trips)
  • CV
  • A letter of recommendation by a professor/lecturer from the home university, to be sent directly to nadine.klopfer@lmu.de until April 15, 2025. Please use the following form:  https://www.daad.de/medien/deutschland/stipendien/formulare/recommendation.doc
  • Letter of motivation (1 page)
  • Bachelor and Master degree certificates and transcripts of records including grades (explaining the home university’s grading system)
  • Documents certifying knowledge of English language skills (C1) and German if applicable
  • Optional: A list of publications

Application Process:

  • First Round: Please send the above documents as one PDF to nadine.klopfer@lmu.de until April 15, 2025. Professors should send their recommendation forms separately to the same address.
  • Second Round: Interviews via Zoom will take place in late April 2025; successful candidates will be nominated to the German Academic Exchange Service
  • Third Round: Final decision by the German Academic Exchange Service based on documents the nominated candidates submit to the German Academic Exchange Service until mid-May 2025
