Guttman Community College adjunct positions

Adjunct Faculty Open Rank – City Seminar: Critical Issue Component (multiple positions)

FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Stella and Charles Guttman Community College at CUNY is currently seeking Adjunct faculty with expertise in interdisciplinary issues with an international bent such as migration, immigration, and globalization to teach three sections of City Seminar (Critical Issue component) during the Spring 1 session (03/01/2019 – 06/11/2019), Spring 2 Session (06/17/2019 to 08/06/2019) and Fall 1 session (9/12/19 – 12/19/19). Adjunct faculty perform teaching and guidance duties related to the course description below.

City Seminar

City Seminar is an interdisciplinary learning community offered in a two-course sequence (City Seminar I and II). The full City Seminar sequence is the anchor of the Guttman First-Year Experience and an integral part of the required general education curriculum at Guttman Community College.

In City Seminar I, students focus on a critical issue of national scale, which involves and affects New York City’s distinctive character as a complex urban system. Building their critical thinking and analytical skills, the course challenges students to explore the historic and social context of an issue, survey multiple perspectives, and analyze the evidence driving key decisions. Topics include education, urban policy, environmental issues, business and industry, public health, work and labor markets, and public arts and culture. Working independently and in groups, students examine how these significant issues impact the lives of NYC residents.

In City Seminar II, students explore an international issue in depth, for instance, migration/immigration, public health, the environment, education, social services, and the globalization of business and industry. Taking this class alongside Composition I, students are introduced to the CUNY library system and learn to conduct research and incorporate outside evidence in their writing.

Critical Issue Component

City Seminar includes multiple discrete components: Critical Issue, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading & Writing, and Studio. Guttman Community College is currently seeking adjunct faculty to teach the Critical Issue component of the course.

The goal of Critical Issue is to facilitate critical thinking through a problem-based approach to a selected topic of great relevance and importance. With content rooted in issues of historical and current significance to New York City, Critical Issue is designed to introduce students to interdisciplinary perspectives in the Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS). The instructor works with students to develop the problem-solving, analytical thinking, and research skills typically utilized in LAS coursework.

The Critical Issue component of City Seminar meets 3 hours per week and requires collaboration with the faculty members teaching the course’s other components.
