Dissertation Proposal Workshop

“Nation and Empire in Modern European History”

Rutgers University-New Brunswick

March 27, 2020

Graduate students in the History Department at Rutgers University-New Brunswick seek participants for our second annual Dissertation Proposal Workshop, to be held on March 27,
2020. This year’s theme is “Nation and Empire in Modern European History.” We welcome participants whose work touches on this theme, broadly construed, in disciplines in the
humanities and humanistic social sciences, such as (but not limited to) art history, history, literature, comparative literature, cultural studies, anthropology, sociology, political science,
linguistics, gender studies, and area studies.

This Workshop is a small, one-day interdisciplinary event where graduate students from Rutgers and other area universities will receive feedback on the beginning stages of their dissertation
project. Participants will submit a paper, to be pre-circulated; at the Workshop, each participant will receive formal comments from a faculty member, followed by a group discussion. Because
of the close attention that each paper receives, formal participation in the Workshop is limited to 5-6 graduate students.

If interested, please send a CV and a 250-word abstract that indicates the type of paper (dissertation proposal, chapter, article, etc.) to dissproposalworkshop2020@gmail.com by
January 15, 2020. Participants will be informed of their acceptance in mid-February. Preference will be given to those who wish to workshop dissertation proposals. As space is limited,
selection will be made on the basis of research compatibility with other participants and on the availability of relevant faculty commentators.

This event is sponsored by the Nation and Empire Working Group, the Rutgers Center for European Studies, and the Rutgers British Studies Center.
