“Predatory” Journals and Conferences: How to Avoid the Shams and Scams

3/2 at 1pm: https://gc-cuny.libcal.com/event/8887051

As a researcher, you are eager to publish your work in journals and present at conferences. But don’t let your eagerness allow you to be fooled by fake (often called “predatory”) journals or conferences. These low-quality outlets exist for the sole purpose of profit, not for the dissemination of peer-reviewed research. Indeed, they frequently lie about their peer review practices and engage in other forms of deceit. Come learn how to spot these bad actors, and how to critically evaluate any journal or conference before submitting a paper or proposal.

Grants & Funding

3/4 at 1pm: https://gc-cuny.libcal.com/event/8578401

Curious how to get started looking for grants, fellowships, and other forms of funding? We’ll talk about the Foundation Directory Online, Pivot, and Grantforward – three excellent databases that provide inroads to identifying funding sources for students, faculty, and for organizations. Bring your questions, and we’ll get started with some active searches for your needs.

Digital Transgender Archives

3/30 at 2pm: https://gc-cuny.libcal.com/event/8873833

Join us for a discussion of the Digital Transgender Archives with founder K.J. Rawson (Associate Professor, Northeastern University). The DTA is “an international collaboration among more than sixty colleges, universities, nonprofit organizations, public libraries, and private collections,” and brings together newly digitized material about gender diverse lives from across the globe, and throughout modern history. We’ll discuss the Digital Transgender Archives’ unique format and structure, as an openly-available resource that applies an interdisciplinary lens to LGBTQ history. This event is free, open to the public, and made possible through a Doctoral Curriculum Enhancement Grant via The Publics Lab, and co-sponsored by CLAGS and The Center for the Study of Women and Society.
