New York Historical is Accepting Applications for the 2025-26 Cohort of the Center for Women’s History Early Career Workshop (ECW)

The New York Historical is now accepting applications for the 2025-26 cohort of the Center for Women’s History Early Career Workshop (ECW) for emerging scholars in the fields of American women’s and gender history. Workshop participants will meet approximately two times per month during the fall 2025 semester to share and discuss their works-in-progress with colleagues in the group and a rotating member of the Center’s Scholarly Advisory Board. During the spring 2026 semester, current members and alumni of the Early Career Workshop will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of professional development programs. These will occur monthly and include workshops on academic publishing, writing for a public audience, and podcasting. The ECW also hosts occasional informal online and in-person events for participants and alumni, which will be announced as they are scheduled.

By bringing together scholars at the vanguard of women’s and gender history, the Early Career Workshop aims to incubate new ideas and methodologies, establish networks between new and established scholars, and refine participants’ research and writing skills.

Several GC History alumni have participated in this workshop, which you can see on their list here.

To Apply

Applicants must be doctoral candidates (ABD) currently in the writing stages of a dissertation or scholars who hold a PhD and are working on their first book proposal or first book manuscript. The dissertation or book topic must primarily use methodologies and research related to American women’s or gender history. The ECW especially welcomes applications from scholars working on the intersection of race, class, gender, sexuality, and ability as well as scholars working to promote social and political equity.

All ECW participants must commit to attending two meetings per month between September 2025 and January 2026, reading papers and preparing comments for each meeting, and sharing their own writing at one meeting during the semester. The workshop will meet virtually via Zoom for one hour on Friday afternoons.

The Early Career Workshop welcomes applicants of all genders, backgrounds, and abilities.

Applicants are required to submit the following materials via Interfolio:

  • CV
  • One-page statement of interest, including a short description of the work you would like to share with the ECW
  • A writing sample of approximately 20-25 pages (double-spaced)
  • Names and contact information for two professional references

Deadline for submission of applications is September 1, 2025.

Applicants will be notified in the first week of September.
