Summer 2025 Support Groups
The Wellness Center is pleased to announce that they are offering these support groups through Summer 2025:
Group Facilitators: Dr. Inez Strama, Assistant Director of Student Counseling Services
Wednesdays 10am on Zoom
This is a group for doctoral students working on their dissertations. Students from all programs, at all stages in the process, are welcome. You are not alone! This is a space for you to give and receive emotional peer support during a time in your academic journey that can often feel lonely and isolating. You may also benefit from accountability, learn practical strategies, and hear how others are navigating the process. This is NOT a peer writing and/or editing group.
Graduate Student Life Support Group
Group Facilitators: Dr. Inez Strama, Assistant Director of Student Counseling Services
Thursdays 11am on Zoom
This group addresses the unique stressors that graduate students often face, including multiple responsibilities, academic pressure, work-life imbalance, impostor syndrome, and adviser challenges. Students are also welcome to discuss life issues outside of school such as the family of origin issues, friendship and romantic relationship dynamics, the stress of living in New York, the impact of the current sociopolitical climate, etc. We encourage self-compassion and also make space for celebrations of personal growth, academic/professional milestones, and other potentially exciting discoveries in the process.
Latinx/o/a Graduate Student Academic Support Group
Group Facilitator: Dr. Néstor Borrero-Bracero, Supervising Staff Psychologist for Student Counseling Services
Summer schedule TBD
This group offers a safe and inclusive space for Latinx/o/a students to explore the unique challenges they face in both personal and academic settings, such as balancing family expectations, managing cultural and language identities, and coping with racism and discrimination. Through compassionate, non-judgmental discussions, members can share their experiences, develop effective coping strategies, and connect with others who understand their journey. Sessions will emphasize stories of strength, pride, and resilience within the Latinx/o/a community, fostering emotional support, a sense of belonging, and self-care practices that empower students to thrive.
Please note that an initial “screening appointment” with a counselor is required to determine goodness of fit for any of these services, and that membership in a group is not guaranteed. If you are interested in counseling services or joining a group, please complete the Request for Services form and email it to wellness@gc.cuny.edu or submit via the Virtual Drop-Off Service (GC students only), and please be sure to include a jpg picture of your student I.D. For students who wish to complete or drop-off our form in-person, please visit here for hours of operation.
Note: You must be a registered student of the Graduate Center or Craig Newmark School of Journalism to be eligible to join.
