Supporting those Coping with Chronic Illness:

How to take care of yourself while you’re taking care of others

Date: Monday, February 28, 2022

Time:  1pm-2:30pm

Facilitators: Kendell Doyle & Danielle Hazeltine of Student Counseling Services

It is no surprise that Graduate Student’s face many challenges both in and outside of school. Outside of the classroom, many students are faced with the role of “caregiver” when taking care of a loved with physical or mental illness. This workshop aims to provide support for those students and connect them with others who are also caring for loved ones with illness. Students will have the opportunity to discuss some of the challenges they face as an ‘informal caregiver’ in a safe and supportive group. Furthermore, students will learn self-care strategies that they can enact daily or during times of stress.

Parenting Our Children Expansively

Date: March 21, 2022

Time: 12:00pm – 1:30pm

Facilitators: Alexis Bleich, MA, LCSW of Alexis Bleich Consulting & Elisa Cameron-Niang, LMHC of Student Counseling Services

In this workshop we will discuss the ways in which we parent our kids, the values and goals we have for ourselves and for them, and the challenges we face in trying to parent expansively – to open up our children’s experiences and minds around issues related to race, culture, sexuality, gender – and more – in our current society, community, and families.

Participants and facilitators will engage in self-reflection activities and group discussion around our own identities and will leave the workshop with resources, conversation starters, and strategies for reflecting and acting on our values as parents.

First-Generation Graduate Student Group

Day/Time TBD via Zoom

Congratulations! You’re the first in your family to go to graduate school. And yet…

  • Do you feel like you’re the only one who doesn’t get how academia works?
  • Are you doubting yourself? Experiencing the impostor syndrome?
  • Do your family, professors, or peers not understand the pressures of being a first-gen student?

If so, you are definitely not alone.  Navigating graduate school as a first-gen student can be complex.  This group is meant to provide a safe space to support each other and to share feelings and experiences.

Group Facilitator: Dr. Inez Strama, Supervising Clinical Psychologist for Student Counseling

Academic Support Group for Black-Identified Students

Wednesdays 12-1pm for Spring 2022 Semester

Being a Black-identified graduate student can be a disorienting and marginalizing experience. Have you been feeling physically exhausted or emotionally fatigued? Are you having trouble concentrating or finding it difficult to maintain your academic workload? Do you notice yourself ruminating about certain interactions, wondering if they were racially charged? Do you ever have the feeling that you do not belong in your graduate program?

Additionally, for many, the heightened focus on race and race relations over the past year has exacerbated existing historical challenges posing increased obstacles to navigate within graduate school. You might find yourself feeling isolated and questioning how you will be able to navigate this journey alone. This group is an academic support space designed to offer Black-identified students the space to process thoughts and feelings, get feedback and support on their experiences, develop organization skills and self-care strategies, all while building community.

If you are interested in joining any of these groups, please complete our Request for Services form (below) and email it to wellness@gc.cuny.edu or submit via our Virtual Drop-Off Service (please include a picture of your student I.D.)  Students who wish to complete or drop-off our form in-person, currently we are open Tuesdays 11am-3pm and Thursdays 9am-2pm.

An individual screening with group facilitator(s) is required. You must be a registered student of the Graduate Center or Craig Newmark School of Journalism to be eligible to join.
