10/10 – “Sounds of Music” event

Celebrate the diversity of cultural backgrounds and musical interests within the CUNY community. Share the music you love in an easy-going, interactive format. Bring your voice, an instrument, or simply your interest!

Our “Sounds of Music” event is low-key and simple. It is intended to encourage people to come together in a social setting, to share music through listening, performing, singing, describing, and discussing personal musical interests. The concept is based on music therapy programs under the direction of Dr. Concetta Tomaino. While our program is intended as a recreational activity, it will operate according to principles that are part of her therapeutic approach, i.e., acknowledging the agency of every individual, providing an opportunity for participation, encouraging the sharing of musical memories with life experiences, and creating opportunities for social interactions that are friendly and inclusive. While embracing the uniqueness of each participant and reducing the blurry lines that separate us, it embraces our commonality through shared musical experiences.

Jeremy Deliotte, an experienced moderator, guides the program, but the directions it takes are flexible. They may include conversation, presenting a recording for listening, performing a favorite song, discussing lyrics, or introducing a musical genre that may be unfamiliar. Music videos, recordings, and karaoke backgrounds are available on the internet and can be pulled up as requested. Participants are invited to bring their instruments. Dr. Concetta Tomaino, a distinguished music therapist, executive director of the Institute for Music and Neurologic Function, and CUNY adjunct professor, will participate via Zoom.

Our program was born from teamwork that originated in Digital Humanities classes at the Graduate Center during 2021-2022. We are grateful to Professors Matt Gold, J. Bret Maney, and our fellow DH students for their support. This is the first of six “Sounds of Music” programs made possible by a grant from the DGSC for this academic year.
