2023 Dissertation Showcase – Applications Open

Now in its sixth year, the Dissertation Showcase is an annual celebration of student research. In this popular event, doctoral students create public talks for a general audience, describing their research in three minutes or less. It is also a chance for the public to sample important work being done at the CUNY Graduate Center. Students who are defending this spring or who have already defended their dissertations in the 2022-2023 academic year are eligible to apply.

“Inside the CUNY Graduate Center: A Dissertation Showcase” will be an in-person event this year, also broadcast via livestream, with selected doctoral students giving short presentations about their work. Each student will have three minutes and one slide, and presentations will run back-to-back. A festive reception will follow the event.

The Presidential Prize for Public Communication ($1,000) will be given to the student who does the best job translating his or her research for the public, chosen by a panel of judges. In addition, viewers will decide on the Audience Choice Award ($1,000) by voting for their favorite presentation.

Applications are due by March 12, 2023 by midnight and must be submitted via the application portal. Submissions will be reviewed by a committee, and selected participants will be notified via email by early April. Please note, the committee receives many more applications than they can accommodate. Students from all disciplines are encouraged to submit proposals.

Participating students will receive coaching from Graduate Center faculty and staff on public presentation, as well as an honorarium of $350. After the event, students will receive professional videos of their presentations to use for their own career advancement.

Past participants have said the event was a highlight of their time at the Graduate Center. For more information and/or to apply, click here.
