Cindy R. Lobel is an Assistant Professor of History at Lehman College of the City University of New York. She is also on the faculties of the Macaulay Honors College and the MALS program at the Graduate Center. Lobel earned a BA from Tufts University and a Ph.D. in US History from the Graduate Center, CUNY. She has taught at Lehman since 2006, offering courses in US History, Urban History, and the History of New York City and State. Since 2013, Lobel has also served as co-coordinator of Lehman’s Writing Across the Curriculum Program. Before joining the faculty at Lehman, Lobel was on the visiting faculties of Barnard College, Connecticut College, and Columbia University. Professor Lobel’s first book, Urban Appetites: Food and Culture in Nineteenth-Century New York was released in April 2014 by the University of Chicago Press (Historical Studies in Urban America Series). She has also published in the Winterthur Portfolio, Common-Place, and History Now. Lobel’s current research includes a biography of Catharine Beecher, to be published by Westview Press in 2015 in their American Women’s Biography series, edited by Carol Berkin and a biography of nineteenth-century New York African American oysterman Thomas Downing.
