The CUNY Humanities Alliance seeks applications from Graduate Center doctoral students in any field for its 2023-2024 fellowship. There are eight new openings.

 

About the Humanities Alliance

The CUNY Humanities Alliance, generously supported by the Mellon Foundation, exposes graduate students to the best ways to support humanities education in the community college context, while simultaneously expanding access to the humanities for undergraduates from the BIPOC and immigration communities served by the City University of New York. Now in its second phase, the HA places graduate students in educational support roles at one of four CUNY community colleges, and also brings them together in a cohort at the Graduate Center for reflection, community, and professional development.

 

Fellowship Structure and Compensation

​CUNY Humanities Alliance Fellowships offer annual compensation of approximately $29,000 (or more, depending on prior service or appointment history with the Graduate Center). The GAB title provides eligibility to purchase the low-cost NYSHIP health insurance as well as in-state tuition remission for fellows who are within their first 10 registered semesters of doctoral study. The 2017-2023 PSC-CUNY Contract also provides in-state tuition remission at the Level 3 tuition rate for doctoral students for four additional semesters past the first 10 registered semesters of doctoral study as long as they are employed in a title recognized under Article 1 of the collective bargaining agreement. The fellowship is a commitment of 15 hours per week during the Fall and Spring semesters. These are one-year positions, and may be renewed for one additional year.​

 

Humanities Alliance Fellows

This fellowship requires reflection, flexibility, collegiality, and willingness to engage in educational support activities that lay crucial foundations for community college students’ learning, thriving, and success. It offers an ideal opportunity for Graduate Center students committed to public higher education, social justice, thinking about the humanities in community college contexts, and supporting CUNY undergraduates. Fellows can expect to strengthen their skills in pedagogy, programmatic support, project management, leadership, events planning, and community building that will serve them in a wide range of career pathways. Graduate fellows will be assigned to work with one of four campus partners. Fellows will also have opportunities to connect and collaborate with the Graduate Center’s Teaching and Learning Center, The Futures Initiative, and other partners throughout the CUNY system. Campus Partners

HA is delighted to work with four CUNY colleges as Humanities Alliance partner institutions: Borough of Manhattan Community College, Guttman Community College, Hostos Community College, and LaGuardia Community College.

On partner campuses, Humanities Alliance fellows will work with staff and faculty mentors on one or more projects intended to support humanities education within and beyond the classroom. Projects are subject to change year-to-year, based on the needs and interests of the parties involved. Fellowship Eligibility

All applicants must be a full time Graduate Center doctoral student, in good academic standing, and entering years 3-5 of study in Fall 2023.

 

Expectations of All CUNY Humanities Alliance Graduate Fellows

• Be a valued member of a supportive team that prizes mentorship, growth, and leadership with a core mission of innovation founded on equity and a commitment to meaningful social and institutional change
• Fulfill the fellowship commitment throughout the fall and spring semesters, both at the Graduate Center (5 hours per week) and at one of the community colleges (10 hours per week). Fellows will be expected to be present in-person during the 2023-2024 academic year, in accordance with campus policies.
• Learn how humanities programs are developed, scoped, promoted, integrated, supported, and evaluated on community college campuses;
• Participate in surveys, focus groups, and interviews to support ongoing research about the efficacy of the program;
• Write public reflections about their experiences on the CUNY Humanities Alliance website;
• Participate in public events at the Graduate Center to share their experiences with the community.
