The National Book Foundation today announced the 2013 National Book Awards longlist for nonfiction.  Among them is our  Distinguished Professor James Oakes, “Freedom National: The Destruction of Slavery in the United States, 1861-1865″ (Norton). Professor Oakes is currently teaching a course on the Civil War at the Graduate Center.
