GC Digital Fellows’ October Workshops

The GC Digital Fellows will be offering workshops again in October on topics such as intro to Python and R, foundations of Excel, using the CUNY Academic Commons, audio editing, and game design. Participation is free and open to anyone with a GC affiliation; however registration at least 24 hours in advance is requested. Please share the following list with students and faculty in your programs.

You can also learn more about how to make use of GC Digital Initiatives resources this semester by reading our “Welcome Back” blog post, which explains how to make the most of GCDI consultations, workshops, events, working groups, and resources.

Please note, our workshops frequently fill to capacity; however, waitlists are available. When seats become available we will let those on the waiting list know asap. When possible, we do our best to extend the number of seats to accommodate as many students as we can.

We look forward to seeing you at a GCDI event this semester!

Intro to R and RStudio
October 1st, 2021 (Fri) @ 3 PM – 4:30 PM
R is a versatile programming language, best suited for a variety of data science needs. Whether you need to run some statistical analyses, create publication-worthy data visualizations, or even publish a website, R has a multitude of tools to help you get what you need done. This workshop is intended to get interested users up to speed with the R language and the RStudio interactive developing environment. By the end, you’ll be able to install and load packages, read in data, do basic data wrangling and visualization, and navigate the RStudio environment.

Note: Please install R & R Studio ahead of the Workshop following these instructions. If you have any installation issues, you can join the R User Group (RUG) [https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/groups/rug-r-users-group/] and come to our first meeting (3:30 pm – 5 pm) on Sep 24th.

This event will be held online. The meeting link will be distributed to those who register. Please use your CUNY Graduate Center email address when registering.

Creating interactive, visual, data driven websites in WordPress
October 7th, 2021 (Thur) @ 2 PM – 3:30 PM

Whether you are seeking to make your research publicly available, host an interactive website for your courses, or track research for your M.A. thesis or dissertation, creating websites has become a critical tool in academic scholarship. Doing so with visual and audio elements can bring data and research findings to life. In this synchronous workshop we will review how to create a free CUNY Academic Commons website supported by WordPress and we will learn how to embed various audio and visual elements into the website. Participants will leave this workshop with a list of free digital tools that are best suited to the type of data you want to showcase on your website including interactive charts, graphs, timelines, social media posts, and audio/video content. Participants will be given the time to test out their embedding skills on a shared workshop website. Signing up for a CUNY Academic Commons account prior to the workshop is required. Some prior experience working with a CUNY Academic Commons website is helpful but not required.

This event will be held online. The meeting link will be distributed to those who register. Please use your CUNY Graduate Center email address when registering.

Foundations of Microsoft Excel
October 20th, 2021 (Wed) @ 4 PM – 5:30 PM
Microsoft Excel is a powerful tool used by researchers to quickly summarize, clean, and make sense of data. Learning this tool could also build a foundation to learn other data analysis tools like R or Python. No experience is necessary to participate, and the workshop will be suitable to researchers completely new to data analysis. The workshop will demonstrate how one could clean up and sort data and review functions for summary statistics, and if time permits a demo on making charts and pivot tables. Feel free to bring your own dataset but not necessary. Access to Microsoft Excel is preferred but Google Spreadsheets and Libreoffice are comparable free softwares.

This event will be held online. The meeting link will be distributed to those who register. Please use your CUNY Graduate Center email address when registering.

Basic Audio Editing with Audacity
October 21st, 2021 (Thur) @ 11AM – 12:30 PM
This hands-on workshop will be a foundational exploration of Audacity as an audio editing software. We will discuss some of its functionalities that can help you edit and clean your audio files to prepare it for publishing and sharing. Prior knowledge and experience is not necessary for the workshop, though having a pre-recorded sound clip/file (~1 min) that you can practice on is encouraged.

This event will be held online. The meeting link will be distributed to those who register. Please use your CUNY Graduate Center email address when registering.

Intro to Educational Game Design
October 28th, 2021 (Thur) @ 3 PM – 4:30 PM
This workshop is intended to provide you with a good foundation in beginning to incorporate games, game-like experiences, and game design praxis in your teaching and research.  The aims of the workshop are threefold:  1) to help you understand how games can reinforce existing knowledge and lead to new learning outcomes for your students, 2) to explore some of the foundational concepts of educational game design and implementation, and 3) to provide a concrete overview of the game design landscape (e.g., tools and software) so you can begin to put your ideas to work.  Together, we will generate and experiment with ideas of how to create meaningful game-based experiences for our students, as well as how you can utilize game-based learning in your own research practices.  This workshop is meant for beginners to game design practice and theory—no technical or critical background is required.

This event will be held online. The meeting link will be distributed to those who register. Please use your CUNY Graduate Center email address when registering.
