An upcoming seminar is being offered as part of the New-York Historical Society’s Bonnie and Richard Reiss Graduate Institute for Constitutional History (ICH). This spring’s seminar will examine the timely topic of misinformation, the regulation of false speech, and how new institutions or legal reforms may help address the corrosive impact of misinformation.

The ICH seminar is produced twice per year and designed for graduate students, junior faculty, and other educators, in history, political science, law, and related disciplines. There is no tuition or other charge for this seminar. The spring seminar will take place in person in April and May:

 

Topic: “The Constitutional History of Misinformation”

Meeting Dates & Time: Fridays, April 21 and 28, May 12 and 19, 2023 | 2–5 pm ET

Meeting Location: The seminar will be presented in person at the New-York Historical Society, 170 Central Park West, New York, NY 10024*

*Although students are encouraged to attend the class in person, livestream participation will be offered to admitted students who do not live in the New York Metropolitan Area or who are unable to attend a class in person.

Instructors: Jameel Jaffer, executive director of the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University; Matthew Connelly, professor of history at Columbia University, co-director of Columbia’s Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy, and the author of The Declassification Engine: What History Reveals about America’s Top Secrets.
