Professor Rogers Smith will be giving the third talk of the 2012-2013 Mellon Sawyer Seminar Series at the Graduate Center, entitled “Liberalism: Private/Public Spheres, Critical Race Theory, and Immigration in the United States,” to be followed by commentary by Prof. Danielle S. Allen and group discussion.


Professor Smith is the Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of Political Scienceat the University of Pennsylvania.  His research looks at constitutional law, American political thought, and modern legal and political theory, focusing in particular on questions of citizenship, race, ethnicity and gender.

His most recent book is Still a House Divided: Race and Politics in Obama’s America, (co-written with Desmond King)Other books include The Unsteady March: The Rise and Decline of Racial equality in America (with Phillip  A. Klinkner); Problems and Methods in the Study of Politics; and Stories of Peoplehood: The Politics and Morals of Political Memberships. His Civic Ideals: Conflicting Visions of Citizenship in U.S. History was a finalist for the 1998 Pulitzer Prize in history.
