March 18 – Postdoctoral Fellowship in Sports History at UW-Madison
The Department of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is pleased to announce a search for a two-year Allan H. Selig Postdoctoral Fellow in the History of Sport and Society in the United States, especially the development of professional sport in its larger national and social contexts since 1900. The successful applicant will hold the Allan H. Selig Postdoctoral Fellowship in Sports History. The appointment will begin in August 2019.
Applicants must hold a doctorate in history or related field by start of appointment. We are particularly interested in candidates who can place the development of U.S. professional sport in its larger social, cultural, and economic contexts, including but not limited to matters of race, gender, labor relations and mass culture. We welcome candidates who view U.S. sport through a comparative or transnational lens.
The postdoctoral fellow will teach one course in the History of Sport per semester, engage in an active research agenda, and participate in the intellectual life of our large history faculty with diverse temporal, geographical, and methodological interests.
The stipend for the postdoctoral fellow will be $68,000 per academic year, with a $5,000 research allowance. The fellow will be furnished with office space and computer equipment.

- A letter of application/Proposal of up to 2,000 words. The proposal should outline completed research (including dissertation), any work in progress, a description of professional and publication goals, a discussion of undergraduate courses you propose to teach here and, importantly, a discussion of the research you would conduct as the Allan H. Selig postdoctoral fellow.
- Curriculum vitae
- Writing sample of up to 35 pages (double spaced). References/images/endnotes may in be in excess of the 35 pages.
- Three confidential letters from three letter writers. Your application should include the names and email addresses of your three letter writers. You should tell your letter writers to send their letters to Todd Anderson, History Department Administrator, firstname.lastname@example.org.
- Statement of teaching philosophy and/or sample syllabi or descriptions of courses you have taught or would like to teach.
