The Graduate Center’s Alfest Graduate Internship Program

The Graduate Center Office of Career Planning and Professional Development is working to develop partnerships with local organizations to host graduate student internships. Summer 2016 will be our pilot session. These opportunities are meant to encourage graduate students to explore diverse career options, while developing skills and experience that will advance their career goals. This summer, paid internships will be available at Open House New York, the Global Fund for Women, and Salon.com (details below). This program is made possible through a generous donation from Graduate Center alumni Karen C. and Lewis J. Altfest, graduates of the PhD programs in history and business, respectively.

The internships provide $4,000 for the summer; interns are expected to work a minimum of 120 total hours. The manner in which these hours are completed can be flexible, and will be agreed upon with the host during the application process. Students may only apply to one internship opportunity. Applications will be due Friday, April 1st , 2016, by 5:00 p.m. Hiring decisions will be finalized by the end of April.

Positions are open to PhD and Master’s students. Students must be currently enrolled to apply. Candidates are encouraged to have their application materials reviewed through the Office of Career Planning and Professional Development before applying. Please plan to submit:

  • A cover letter addressed to the internship organization explaining:
    • What skills and experience you bring to the project
    • Why you are interested in the organization/project
  • A current CV or resume
  • A one-page document explaining how the internship would further your career goals
  • The name and contact information of a professional reference.

Open House New York seeks a dynamic and energetic individual to join its staff as Research Intern.

Best known for organizing the annual Open House New York Weekend every October, Open House New York is an arts and civic organization that engages a broad public in issues about architecture, planning, and design in New York City. The Research Intern will provide key research and writing support for two major projects this summer: the editing and production of the OHNY Weekend Event Guide, which will be distributed as a free insert in Time Out New York in October 2016, and research and writing for a major year-long project about the environment, waste infrastructures, and New York City.

The ideal candidate will have an interest in architecture, urban studies, and/or New York City. The Research Intern must be detail oriented and organized, able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and work under pressure. This is a unique opportunity to work behind-the-scenes at a fast paced non-profit that has unparalleled access to New York City.

Experience and qualifications:

  • Interest in architecture, urban studies, nonprofit arts management, and New York City history
  • Must be detail oriented
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once and work independently
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with print & electronic research
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Preference given to candidates who are familiar with CreativeSuite

The graduate student who undertakes this summer project will examine the question: How have Global Fund for Women and its grantee partners contributed to the passage of Anti Violence Against Women laws in 25 countries in the past 26 years?

Context: The 25 year impact research commissioned by Global Fund for Women in 2013 highlighted the passage of anti VAW laws in 25 countries as one of our biggest achievements. We would like to learn more about the following:

  • What roles did Global Fund and its grantee partners play to facilitate the change in policy in their countries?
  • What roles did Global Fund and its grantee partners play in the implementation of anti-VAW laws in these 25 countries? This includes monitoring policy implementation, holding government accountable, building capacity for government agencies, educating the public about the laws, etc.
  • How many women and girls could potentially benefit from the passage of anti-VAW laws in in the 25 countries?
  • Recommendations for Global Fund for Women in tracking its historical impact in the future.

Potential data sources:

  • Global Fund for Women’s grantmaking database
  • Grantee reports (in English, Spanish, Russian, French, and Arabic)
  • Global Fund’s 25 year impact study
  • Review of literature
  • Global/regional databases on violence against women and gender equality
  • Interviews with selected stakeholders

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of human rights and interest in women’s rights
  • Proficient with excel
  • Experience using databases
  • Strong analysis and quantitative skills (for example, coursework in statistics)
  • Strong writing, research and analytical skills
  • Knowledge of various research and evaluation approaches and methods
  • Knowledge of the economic, political, social and cultural trends in the region
  • Ability to coordinate and manage complex tasks
  • Creative problem-solving, critical thinking and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision
  • Ability to interact with staff at all levels of the organization
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop solid working relationships
  • Demonstrate sensitivity and appreciation for diverse viewpoints and different communication styles in a politically and culturally diverse environment.
  • Able to work in a diverse, fast-paced environment, exhibiting flexibility
  • Motivated to learn

Preferred

  • Experience with other data analysis software (SPSS, STATA, R)
  • Experience with data visualization
  • Proficient reading and writing in another Global Fund for Women  language (Spanish, Russian, Arabic, French)

Education and Experience

  • Master’s or PhD degree (in progress) in political science, international studies, public policy, development studies, sociology, economics, or another relevant field. Preferred specialization in research methodology and knowledge.
  • 1-3 years of work or volunteer experience, preferably in non-profit organization.
  • Experience conducting quantitative and qualitative analysis is preferred
  • Experience in working in a diverse and fast-paced environment.

The chosen intern for this project will complete the internship remotely, with regular in-person check-ins with the project supervisor. The intern will also invited to selected team/staff meetings and receive an orientation before beginning the project.

Job Description:

The selected intern will put skills fine-tuned during the PhD process—research, writing for different audiences, analysis and synthesis, distillation, strategizing, creativity and outside-the-box thinking—to use through two main projects during the course of their internship. These projects will be discussed in greater detail during the selection process.

Desired Qualities/Experience:

The successful candidate will be an analytic, outside-the-box thinker who can multi-task while keeping your cool and your sense of humor. We seek an excellent researcher and concise writer who can quickly hone in on the bottom “so what” line and craft content for a variety of audiences. Experience in the digital humanities is preferred. Past work in journalism or communications is a plus, but not required.
