Teaching as an International Student

International students face the challenge of navigating a new institution while learning about its structures and culture. Stepping into a class in the instructor’s role can be particularly difficult since we have to facilitate learning and, at the same time, guide students through unfamiliar practices. We might have questions about our students’ lives, their cultural and professional backgrounds, about the American university system in general and about CUNY more specifically. We might be unsure about how to interact with students in the classroom or during office hours, or give feedback and grade student work. And for many of us, the prospect of teaching as a non-native speaker of English is daunting. All of these dynamics are heightened by the complexities of our current moment.

On November 20th, the Teaching and Learning Center will offer a workshop to address teaching in the CUNY classroom as an international student. We’ll discuss the educational system’s structure, student-teacher relations, and how to find support structures at different campuses. The workshop will identify and share pedagogical strategies that allow us to respond to diverse institutional contexts, and draw international students into a community of committed educators at the Graduate Center and across CUNY.
