NYU Liberal Studies – Part-Time Faculty Opening in Middle Eastern Global Cultures

Liberal Studies at New York University is seeking a part-time instructor to teach Middle Eastern Global Cultures in Fall 2019.

Liberal Studies provides a unique interdisciplinary educational experience to undergraduate students. The Liberal Studies Core consists of a two-year interdisciplinary global curriculum drawing on great works across civilizations. The Global Liberal Studies Bachelor of Arts, one of NYU’s premier liberal arts degrees, builds on the global core with an upper division interdisciplinary set of concentrations that direct students toward different areas of global study.

Middle Eastern Global Cultures is an interdisciplinary, discussion-based seminar that explores cultures, social institutions, political economies, and social change in contemporary Middle Eastern and North African societies. Topic selections will vary according to the interest and expertise of the instructor, but course material may include–but is not limited to–Islam and Islamic history, social and cultural practices, artistic traditions (such as miniature painting, religious architecture, poetry, film), cultural exchange and trade (the Silk Road, relations between Middle Eastern and African and Asian empires, the emergence of capitalistic practices), the impact of the rise of European empires, religious and/or ethnic minorities in the Middle East, European colonies and their legacy, major conflicts such as the Arab-Israeli conflict or Arab Cold War, and studies on ideologies of the region such as Turkish and Persian nationalisms and Zionism. Both primary and secondary source materials should be assigned, and may include film, various art and media forms, and artifacts. Students are expected to produce 3750-4000 words of graded written work, to complete at least two exams, and to participate actively in class discussion.

The course meets twice weekly, with class sessions lasting 75 minutes.

Minimum qualifications: a Ph.D. in Middle Eastern Studies, Islamic Studies, African Studies, Anthropology, History, Religion, or another relevant Humanities field to be awarded by the date of appointment; a minimum of one year of college-level teaching experience; and demonstrated excellence in teaching.
