Scripps College invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in modern U.S history

Scripps College, a women’s liberal arts college with a strong interdisciplinary tradition, invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in modern U.S history (1877 to the present), beginning in the academic year 2022-2023. Field of specialization is open; we are especially interested in candidates who are thinking in critical and innovative ways about what constitutes U.S. history. The successful candidate will also be expected to teach in the college’s Core Curriculum in Interdisciplinary Humanities program.

Ph.D. in History required by position start date. Evidence of teaching experience and teaching excellence are also required. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to the College’s goal of improving higher education for underrepresented students. Towards that end, applicants should submit a brief (one page) statement on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).

Applicants should submit the following materials: cover letter, CV, three letters of recommendation, article- or chapter-length writing sample, DEI statement, and teaching portfolio (including two sample syllabi and evidence of teaching experience and excellence or potential for such: no evaluations). Recommenders should submit their letters of recommendation to HistorySearch@scrippscollege.edu. For matters other than the submission of material, contact Corey Tazzara, Chair, History Search Committee, at ctazzara@scrippscollege.edu.  Review of applications will begin December 20, 2021 and continue until the position is filled.

Scripps College is one of seven members of The Claremont Colleges cluster located 35 miles east of Los Angeles. In keeping with its ongoing commitment to build and support a diverse and equitable academic community, Scripps College actively encourages applications from women and members of historically under-represented groups.  Preference will be given to applicants committed to improving higher education for underrepresented students.
