Feelings of self-doubt and inadequacy are pervasive among graduate students, particularly BIPOC graduate students.  The expectations of achieving an advanced degree often feel daunting and can lead them to question their abilities and at times even question who they are.  The Imposter Phenomenon and BIPOC Graduate Students Workshop will introduce participants to the characteristics of Imposter Phenomenon, highlight familial, sociocultural, and situational factors that contribute to it, and discuss its impact on BIPOC students. Participants will have the opportunity to personalize the information presented by discussing strategies to reduce and manage the negative effects of the Imposter Phenomenon.

GROUP COUNSELING & ACADEMIC SUPPORT GROUPS:

 Dissertation Support Group

Fridays 1:00-2:00pm via Zoom

Group Facilitators: Dr. Inez Strama, Assistant Director of Student Counseling Services and Annalise Caviasco, MA, Clinical Fellow for Student Counseling Services

Interpersonal Process Group

In-Person: Mondays 2-3:30PM

Group Co-Facilitators: Dr. Inez Strama, Assistant Director of Student Counseling Services and Zeina Kamareddine, M.A., Clinical Fellow for Student Counseling Services

This group is for individuals looking to expand their awareness of themselves in relation to self and others. The focus is on themes such as trust, intimacy, and boundaries. If you struggle with interpersonal patterns such as not knowing how to communicate your needs/feelings, putting others’ needs ahead of your own, and/or shying away from getting close to people, then this group might be for you. It is a unique opportunity for honest (& sometimes challenging) exploration of personal and interpersonal process in an emotionally supportive environment. It is also an opportunity to practice new ways of being in connection with yourself and others

Please note that an initial “screening appointment” with a counselor is required to determine goodness of fit for any of these services, and that membership in a group is not guaranteed. If you are interested in counseling services or joining a group, please complete the Request for Services form and email it to wellness@gc.cuny.edu or submit via the Virtual Drop-Off Service (GC students only), and please be sure to include a jpg picture of your student I.D. For students who wish to complete or drop-off the form in-person, please visit here for hours of operation.

Note: You must be a registered student of the Graduate Center or Craig Newmark School of Journalism to be eligible to join.

PLEASE SEE THE STUDENT COUNSELING SERVICES WEBSITE FOR A FULL LIST OF THE SERVICES AND MORE: Student Counseling Services | CUNY Graduate Center
