Spring 2017 adjunct needed at SUNY Purchase
The State University of New York at Purchase seeks an adjunct in modern American history to teach an upper level course entitled “To Enjoy Our Freedom: African American History Since 1865. The class meets on Tuesdays from 2:30 to 6:10.
Here is the course description:
This course examines social, political, economic, and cultural forces shaping the lives of African Americans since the end of the Civil War. We will explore the meaning of freedom and citizenship from the late nineteenth century to the present. Topics include the promises and limitations of Reconstruction; the diverse and conflicting strategies pursued by community members and leaders; the legacy of the Harlem Renaissance and other cultural movements; and the burgeoning of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements. We will pay particular attention to the complicated ways in which race, class, and gender influenced the experiences and choices of individuals.
