11/19 – “Charting the Everyday” (MAMES/ DH lecture)

The Master’s Program in Middle Eastern Studies, in conjunction with the Master’s Program in Digital Humanities, presents:

Doctor Lindsey Stephenson (Department of Near Eastern Studies, Princeton University)

Charting the Everyday:  A Digital Humanities Approach to  Analyzing Historical Court Records in Bahrain

While preserving the record of legal systems and their workings, court archives can also be a treasure trove for researchers interested in the everyday lives of the many ordinary people resorting to the courts for justice. Dr. Lindsey Stephenson will discuss how digital humanities methods enable archival research ‘against the grain’ to uncover histories from below. She will explain how her treatment of British colonial court records, from Bahrain between 1920 to 1950, helps paint a particular picture of the daily lives of the territory’s Iranian migrant community.
